As of February 1, 2010, we are excited to announce that CVSDude is now Codesion - "Bringing cohesion to code control." Feel free to check out our name change comic, the first few frames of which are shown above. This comic paints a picture of our history, our growth, and our long-debated decision to move beyond CVSDude.

Codesion ushers the next phase of our growth, which will expand from Subversion hosting (and CVS/Trac/Bugzilla/DAV) to a range of software development services, all of which are centrally managed from the FrogSAFE Platform.

Picking the Right Name

After weighing up many different names, we opted to invent a new word - Codesion. We considered three primary criteria in selecting this name. First, we did not want to be tied to a particular technology (i.e. SVN, CVS, SCM, git, etc)- long a concern we've faced with the name 'CVSDude' (yes, 95% of our customers use SVN, not CVS). Second, we wanted it short and sweet - seven characters or less is considered a best practice, and although Codesion is eight characters, we felt it was close enough. Finally, we sought a name that did link back to code, software, or a related technical aspect, while still being catchy and fun.

With Codesion, we have satisfied all three - and the Frog is still included in our logo, just slimmed down. This represents our strategic shift into high value yet "slimmed down", on-demand Enterprise class solutions.

What happens next?

In the coming weeks, all areas of our online presence(s) will switch from CVSDude to Codesion - including the Community Help Center, our Blog, Server Status Reporting, and all of our reply email addresses.

Customers repository URLs will not be affected by this name change in any way - nor will your use of the system in any way. Please do not change your repository URLs when checking out CVSDude-hosted repositories. Any eventual changes we make in repository URL syntax will be fully backwards compatible with CVSDude.

We hope you like "Codesion" - please tell us what you think below!

CVSDude was a good name. Codesion is a world class brand name. I like it!

posted @ Monday, February 01, 2010 3:57 PM by Bruno Goulet

I think this is a good idea. I have recommended CVSDude to my customers and some have actually adopted it as a solution, so there are lots of things they are doing right but the name does sound a bit comical and a new user may not take them too seriously so from a branding point of view there was room for improvement. The green frog is cool cause it gives it personality, green is in, and frogs are cool. Keep up the good work guys!

Nice choice. It's always fun to see the thought process behind creative decisions. Put it this way... you did better than the folks who came up with iPad!

Catchy name, I'm surprised nobody used it earlier :) Well done! And just for the record, you almost satisfied the short and sweet constraint as codesion is 8 chars not 7 :)

Good idea, 'CVS'dude was a bit misleading. I like the new name and wordmark.

You satisfied 7 chars or less with "codesion"? Math class not the strong suit there, but keep up the good work.

Thanks for the positive feedback - really appreciate it!

@ Joris and @d34thebl0w- lol, I clearly need to work on the math skills! Actually I clarified the post - I had meant to say that we decided Codesion was "close enough" to the best practice of 7 characters or less (although you are correct - it has 8 chars).

Bummer when I got this email. Discovered cvsdude many years ago and many friends & their companies using it from my reco. The name was actually part of what attracted me, because between it and the tech content I could tell it was a small outfit manned with some brains and driven by the techs and not marketing guys.

Sorry to see the instantly understood (among programmers, who are the people that acutally use your service) name changed to a hard-to-scan made up word that instantly says "we've gotten big and want to appear more slick".

Code...shon? Rhodesian? Don't like it. Seriously, the suits like this?

posted @ Monday, February 01, 2010 5:17 PM by Pete

I agree with Thomas. CVSDude was really nice. The new name sounds really far-fetched and irritating. I wish you could spend your efforts on improving the service instead of corporate identity. Good luck!

Dude, where's my code!

posted @ Monday, February 01, 2010 9:09 PM by Dude Dudeski

Well it's good to move away from "CVSDude" but "Codesion" is a little cheesy and contrived...

Also I had to read the description email to figure out how to pronounce it. "Code scion? Code zion? Huh? Oh, code and COHESION, I get it..."

I didn't mind telling people about CVSDude in real life, but saying "Codesion" out loud makes me feel kind of embarrassed. The response of the person I'm talking to will probably be "What? How do you spell that? Codewhation?"

posted @ Monday, February 01, 2010 9:51 PM by J

BTW, after reading the comic, I have to say that "codesion" isn't much better than "coderiffic". At least the pronunciation of "coderiffic" is apparent on first glance.

Liking it more and more all the time

Nice job Codesion

I reckon word of mouth will be affected - its difficult to tell people about it -

this is what happens when two funny words are combined and they have no meaning at all.

this explain the research on bringing on the name was done in the organisation itself, rather then taking help from professionals.

Code-o-holic - woo! found a new name

posted @ Tuesday, February 02, 2010 12:26 AM by As one said before - service improvement is more important than the name!!!

hmm... really worried if this company is too gonna forget its core business and focus more on marketing... The name is the perfect example of when tech geeks are introduced or rather forced to marketing...

codellision ~ with less vision.

don't do it guys...

funny thing to notice -

change in name of course - which i wish was cooler than CVSDude..

and frog toes are now five from three before (previous design) .. lol

posted @ Tuesday, February 02, 2010 12:59 AM by Johnw

Don't like it.

CVS dude was clear about what service it provides.

Codesion needs a tag line to explain what service you provide because the name does not.

my 2 c.

I like the change away from CVSDude for the same reason why other people wanted to keep it - doesn't sound professional. Codesion may not have been my first choice though.

Changing a brand after establishing it for many years is a dangerous business. I have seen companies fall cause of this. Hope there are plenty of dough behind the re-branding. Best of luck. Tough one!

If you're going to invent a new word, spell it right. You should have left the "h" in the name. "Codehesion" would have been both more pronounceable at first glance and clever/catchy. Plus at 10 chars, it's still 'close enough'.

posted @ Tuesday, February 02, 2010 12:02 PM by Jake

CVSDude was a mediocre name, but we all got used to it. Codesion is a lot worse, mainly because of the pronunciation uncertainty. I predict another name change by 2013. One day it will go the way of other great name changes, along with Talbot, Leningrad, the United Arab Republic, North Britain, and of course Consignia (see http://www.brandchannel.com/features_profile.asp?id=76).

posted @ Tuesday, February 02, 2010 2:07 PM by Graham Asher

I like it. I don't get that some people think it is hard to pronounce. How else would you pronounce it?
Cohesion....add a d....Codesion

Love the new name guys. It's hard to satisfy everyone. Keep up the good work!

Codesion is A-grade, this name change is a good news for me. It doesn't surprise me that you had problems with 'cvsdude' like your comic shows. Keep up the great service, we depend on it.

posted @ Tuesday, February 02, 2010 11:57 PM by Prakash

I hate the new name, but understand the thinking behind it. It's just a sad reflection on the mindset of upper-management. I've had to defend my decision to host code at CVSDude many times, and the thing that always got "sir" types to shut up was "IBM uses CVSDude, so they're certainly good enough for you!"

posted @ Wednesday, February 03, 2010 9:47 AM by Ben Bernard

Thanks all- great to see a lot of interest in the name! Changing from CVSDude does of course have risk and also invokes a bit of nostalgia for those of us who've built the company up. But we're excited about Codesion and are getting plenty of positive feedback (as well as some less than positive hehe).

But make no mistake - we have very little time to mull over these things, as our focus is firmly on enhancing our service, technology, and of course responding to customer requests.

@Jonw- thanks for the sharp eye on the number of frog toes - great catch! The Australian Green Tree Frog has 4 toes on its front pads (the inner "thumb" is vestigal, small), and the rear pads have 3. We're going to have to pin the frog down at take to him with clippers...actually we will modify our logo shortly.

Everyone at my company thinks "Codesion" is a bad name. The problem? It's unclear from seeing the name written how it's supposed to be pronounced.

posted @ Wednesday, February 03, 2010 3:41 PM by Chris Wilson

I agree with Jake that "Codehesion" would be much better. "Codehesion" has too big advantages. First, it's clear how to pronounce it. Second, the link to the word "cohesion" is clear. When I first saw the word "Codesion", I didn't know it was supposed to be a reference to "cohesion". The "h" really needs to be there to clue in the reader to the "cohesion" allusion.

The name change is a step in the right direction. But I agree "Codehesion" would have been better. It would have save me the embarrassment of telling people it was now "Code Sion"... oops! ;-)

Love the new name!

I can only imagine how hard it was to change something so integral to your history, but I really think you've done a very wise thing in changing it, as your old name painted you in a light that was no longer the right color. :-)

posted @ Thursday, February 04, 2010 5:53 PM by Tom Mornini

Come on dude, you can do better than that. Even though CVSDude sounds unprofessional, it has strong brand recognition and recall.

I have to think REALLY hard just to spell codesion. I'm sure if you check your web statistics next month, you'll find lots of people still typingwww.cvsdude.com

Corporate branding is much tougher than writing code. Easy to say, spell, domain name available, no TM infringement, good logo. Inspired. Next time, how about getting the community to participate via a naming contest.

CVSdude (a.k.a. Codesion) has been a part of my life for over 5 years but recently I have started to move away from technology and I have not used my account in a while.

Today, my account auto-renewed and I sent an email to CVSdude staff asking for a refund. I received my refund immediately and without question.

I have always recommended CVSdude to my friends, but after this bit of awesome customer support and respect, I am going to go out of my way to recommend Codesion.

Three cheers for CVSdude.

When I need to light up some projects again (and I know I will) I will be heading back to CVSdude asap.
